In a shocking twist, Marvel Studios has announced that Robert Downey Jr., who played Tony Stark is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but not as the iconic Iron Man.
Instead, he’s playing the infamous villain, Doctor Doom. Yes, you read that right! The man who once wore the Iron Man suit will now wear Victor von Doom’s deadly armour. This surprise was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con 2024.

The Russo brothers, known for “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Endgame,” confirmed RDJ’s return.
The decision to cast RDJ as Dr. Doom, a character traditionally known as the enemy of the Fantastic Four, has sparked intense speculation and excitement among fans.
History between Iron Man and Dr. Doom
In the comics, Dr. Doom’s fight goes beyond his rivalry with Mister Fantastic. Reed Richards (Mister Fantastic) and Victor von Doom were college roommates and strong competitors.
Victor’s obsession with a dangerous communication machine led to a horrifying accident, transforming him into Doctor Doom.
But it doesn’t end there. Iron Man and Doctor Doom have clashed multiple times. In the 1981 storyline “Doomquest,” Tony Stark and Victor von Doom were transported back in time to King Arthur’s court.
They battled it out there, with Iron Man teaming up with King Arthur’s knights to defeat Doom’s plans.
More recently, in 2007’s “Mighty Avengers,” Iron Man battled Doom after an attack on New York City. This led to an all-out invasion of Doom’s Latveria kingdom.
The Multiverse Angle
The possibilities are endless with the MCU fully involved in the Multiverse Saga.
Some fans theorize that this version of Dr. Doom could be a variant of Iron Man from another universe. This would offer a fresh and interesting twist on RDJ’s character.
