The much-anticipated Tamil period drama, Thangalaan, starring Chiyaan Vikram, is now available on Netflix.
Directed by Pa. Ranjith, the film, released theatrically on August 15, 2024, has been a massive success, grossing over ₹130 crore worldwide. Fans can now enjoy this visually stunning and emotionally charged drama from their homes.
Thangalaan Now Streaming on OTT
Thangalaan is now streaming on Netflix in four languages: Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam. Although earlier reports suggested that the film might be released in five languages, including Hindi, the Hindi version is currently unavailable on Netflix. It is expected to be added later.
Set against the Kolar Gold Fields backdrop during the colonial era, Thangalaan explores tribal labourers’ struggles under British exploitation.
The film blends themes of resistance, oppression, and mystical realism. Vikram delivers a powerful performance as a tribal chief who navigates the complex dynamics of survival and rebellion.
The storyline also features mythology elements, with Malavika Mohanan playing a mysterious sorceress.
The movie’s cinematography, costumes, and music by GV Prakash Kumar have been widely praised for their authenticity and impact. However, some critics noted timing issues in the second half.

The film’s OTT release faced delays due to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Madras High Court.
The complainant alleged that Thangalaan portrayed Buddhism reverently while depicting Vaishnavism sarcastically, potentially sparking religious tensions.
The court dismissed the case in October 2024, clearing the way for its digital premiere.

With its rich storytelling and stellar performances, Thangalaan has become one of 2024’s standout films. It is also rumoured to be considered for international awards like the Oscars.
