Watching movies in theaters or on OTT platforms is about to get more expensive in Karnataka. The state government is planning to introduce a new tax on cinema tickets and OTT subscriptions.
The Karnataka Cine and Cultural Workers (Welfare) Bill was introduced in the state Assembly on Friday, July 19. The government will review the tax every three years.
Why the New Tax?
The funds collected from this tax will be used to provide social security benefits such as ESI and PF for cine artists and cultural performers.
The tax, known as the Cine and Cultural Activists Welfare Cess, will be between 1% and 2% on ticket and subscription prices.
For example, if a movie ticket costs ₹200, you might pay up to ₹4 more due to this tax.
The new tax will apply to all cinema tickets and OTT subscriptions in Karnataka. This means that watching your favorite movies and shows on platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+ Hotstar could become more expensive.
The government also plans to extend this tax to theatrical plays.
Impact on Your Entertainment Budget
While the increase might seem small, it could add up over time, especially for regular movie fans and OTT subscribers.
The government believes this small hike will have a significant positive impact on the financial security of cultural workers.
Not everyone is happy about this new tax. The BJP criticized the proposal, calling it unfair on Karnataka. They argue that it will make entertainment more expensive.
