Indian 2 starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Shankar, is facing troubles with its OTT release due to a poor box office performance.
The movie, which hit theaters on 12 July 2024, failed to meet expectations despite its massive 250 crore budget.
Disappointing Performance
Released with massive hype, Indian 2 was expected to continue the iconic 1996 film Indian. Mathrubhumi reports Netflix acquired streaming rights for Indian 2 for 120 crores before its theatrical release.
However, the film’s weak box office collections have prompted the streaming company to reconsider the deal.
Troubles with Netflix
Sources reveal that Netflix has expressed dissatisfaction with the agreement and asked producers to return half of the payment. This change has pushed back the OTT premiere.
The movie’s box office performance was disappointing, earning only around 81 crores in India and a global total of 147 crores. The production cost and expectations of this product are significantly lower than expected.
Industry experts suggest that OTT platforms typically finalize deal amounts based on film theatrical performance. Given Indian 2’s poor showing, Netflix is likely to renegotiate the terms with the producers.
Uncertain OTT Release Date
Indian 2 was scheduled to premiere on Netflix in August 9, 2024. However, due to ongoing disagreements, Netflix and Lyca Productions have yet to announce the official OTT release date.
As reported by Republic World, the streaming date is now uncertain, with the original OTT rights deal possibly being cancelled.
The film’s box office collections have also been declining due to negative reviews.
According to Hindustan Times, the movie recorded a significant drop from its opening day earnings of ₹25.6 crores to ₹15 crores on its third day.
