Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has surprised fans with an unseen audition tape from his latest YouTube channel, Aamir Khan Talkies.
The video reveals his attempt to play Sub-Inspector Shyam Manohar in Kiran Rao’s critically acclaimed film, Laapataa Ladies.
Despite being the film’s producer, Aamir was ultimately replaced by Ravi Kishan, a decision that sparked widespread online discussion.
A Glimpse Into Aamir’s Audition
In the viral clip, Aamir is seen dressed as a rural cop, chewing paan and delivering lines in a distinct dialect.
The audition showcases his creative process, including bloopers and body language experiments.
While fans appreciated his dedication, many agreed that Ravi Kishan was the perfect fit for the role.
One fan commented, “Ravi Kishan nailed it; Aamir looked too elite for this character.” Another wrote, “Ravi Kishan ke samne pani kam chai (Aamir’s performance pales in comparison to Ravi Kishan).”
Director Kiran Rao, who is also Aamir’s ex-wife, explained her decision during interviews. She felt that Aamir’s star persona would have made the character’s arc predictable. In contrast, Ravi Kishan brought surprise and authenticity to the role.
Aamir himself admitted that while he was keen on playing the part, he gracefully stepped aside after seeing Ravi’s screen test.
Laapataa Ladies: A Critical Success
Released theatrically in March 2024, Laapataa Ladies is celebrated for its unique storytelling and strong performances.
The film revolves around two brides exchanged in rural India during the 90s and features newcomers Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Sparsh Shrivastava. It bagged 10 trophies at the IIFA Awards 2025, including Best Supporting Actor for Ravi Kishan.
Despite being India’s official entry for the Oscars 2025 in the Best International Feature Film category, Laapataa Ladies did not secure a nomination. However, its impact remains undeniable.
